Competitive Cheer Program with Special Olympics Japan, Tokyo

Hands On Tokyo has started a new program that athletes with special needs and volunteers practice “Competitive Cheer” together twice a month on the second and fourth Sunday afternoons. This is a Unified Sport (the sport that people with or without special needs compete together) program that volunteers participate in the Special Olympics Japan, Tokyo’s “Competitive Cheer” program together.

The coaches of the program are members of the Japan Sports Cheer & Dance Federation. The participants usually do stretches and preparatory exercises to the music with the coaches first, and then practice "Performance Cheer (Cheer Dance)" that they dance with choreography to the music as well as “Competitive Cheer.”

On August 22, we had an online performance day, and participants performed cheer dance to the three songs they have learned so far: YOUR SONG, Tonight, and CHEER TOKYO. About 40 participants, including coaches, athletes, and volunteers, joined the program on the day. The athletes and volunteers were divided into two teams, Team A and Team B, and danced in order, and enjoyed watching each other's performances.

All the participants remembered the difficult choreography for the fast-paced songs very well. With wearing the same team-colored red T-shirt and pompom in their hands, all of them danced wonderfully with a “BIG” smile.

Some of the athletes commented that it was fun to be able to dance to the music together with other participants although they have not been able to meet in person. One of the volunteers commented that she could not memorize the choreography well, but since the athletes remembered the dances so well, she could dance by following their movement. Due to current Covid-19 situation, the program needs to be carried out online for a while, but everyone is looking forward to practicing in person soon.

One of Hands On Tokyo’s most important concerns, is “what can we do now to support our community,” and how can we support that community as quickly as possible.
Summer Vacation Craft Work Program

We held an online summer vacation craft work program with children in a childrens’ home. A program was led by a volunteer who is good at making crafts, with the theme of "things you can make with something you already have at home." This time, we made a kaleidoscope using the core of toilet paper, and we also made gold, silver, and bronze medals using aluminum foil and paper plates because this year is an Olympic year. They all enjoyed decorating the kaleidoscope as much as they want and rewarded themselves with the gold medals they made themselves! Children are all good with their hands, and they love making crafts. This activity will continue at a pace of once every two months. We are planning to make Halloween-related crafts in the next program.

Yuuki-no-Tsubasa Inclusion × Hands On Tokyo, Online Art Program

Hands On Tokyo held an online art program with " Yuuki-no-Tsubasa Inclusion" and artist volunteers who are active based in Tokyo. "Yuuki-No-Tsubasa Inclusion" is a nonprofit organization who is working toward an "inclusive society," that make all people, regardless of their disabilities, live shining and lively life, and live as who they are. Five members from Yuuki-No-Tsubasa, ages from 14 to 34 years old, joined the program. Participants enjoyed chatting online with the artists while they freely drew wonderful pictures on the theme of “sports.” During the program, Mr. Takuto Koyanagi who is known as a pianist with autism showed us a wonderful piano performance. Other participants swayed to the music comfortably, and one of the participants even brought instruments from his room and started playing the music with Takuto. Everyone enjoyed the moment, and it became a wonderful art + music program.
